TIPS FOR WATER DAMAGED FURNITURE
If you have had furniture damaged by the recent flood waters a few things to remember as you evaluate your furniture:
-
Take photos of as much of the damaged furniture as possible. If you have a digital camera, make a disc for your self and one for your insurance company. The more information you can provide to the adjuster (i.e. receipts, instruction booklets etc) the faster and smoother your claim will go.
-
Move the furniture to a dry place as soon as is practical. Move the furniture periodically so that the feet will be able to dry appropriately.
-
Dry it off any damaged furniture with a chamois or other soft cloth and let it air dry. Try to dry all sides, top and bottom or inside as well as outside to help eliminate warping. Keep cloth, rugs or other wet things away from wood. DO NOT TRY TO ACCELERATE THE DRYING PROCESS WITH HEATERS!
-
Keep wood out of direct sunlight or heat while drying as this will cause wood to crack or split.
-
Clean all surfaces with a mild cleaner that is recommended for wood. Repeat as necessary.
-
If the wood cracks or splits or any glue blocks or other pieces fall off, try to save them and put them in a ziplock bag and try to mark them so you know what they belong to.
-
Veneer often gets loose from moisture. If pieces are loose or fall off try to keep them in a small ziplock bag or envelope so they can be replaced or repaired.
-
If the drawers of chests or tables are stuck don’t try to open them until they are dry as you will do more damage to the wood and drawer pulls.
Upholstered Pieces
Upholstered pieces will most likely need to be reupholstered as they will be stained or smell after drying. Some stains may be removed by cleaning if only wet in a small area.
-
The upholstery should be removed as soon as possible so that the wood underneath can dry.
In regard to possible restoration and repair of your furniture do not make any hasty decisions when settling your claim or disposing of your furniture, try to list missing items room by room to recall what was in each place.
